Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) certainly sounds like a foreign word. It even sounds a little intimidating. But truth be known, it is one of the most amazing forms of exercise out there today.

Photos by Susan Sidebottom PhotographyJoseph Pilates, a legendary fitness trainer, developed the method in the 1920’s. His methodology, later coined “Pilates” is a one of a kind program based on the principle that both the body and mind must work together to achieve total fitness.

Pilates is a very unique system of exercise. It does not involve tedious repetitions, nor hours at a time spent in a gym. What it does involve is fewer, more precise movements, performed in a specific order, making it a much more efficient way to strengthen, build, and firm the body.

Its primary focus is on the “powerhouse” of your body – these are the muscles between your sternum and hips. Many people consider these their “problem” areas; their stomachs and backs. The reason it is so important to strengthen your “powerhouse” is because these muscles are the center of your balance, movement, and posture. By strengthening these muscles you can improve not only muscle tone but also your posture, flexibility, and balance, thus uniting your body and mind.
