What is the Difference between Pilates Based Physical Therapy and Traditional Physical Therapy?

Pilates Based Physical Therapy has a large emphasis on a mind-body connection. The Pilates equipment assists patients in gaining more control over their body through a focused mind. Within PBPT, common modalities used in traditional physical therapy may also be used in treatment sessions which may include manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue work and joint mobilizations, and heat and ice therapies. As with any type of intervention, it is the Physical Therapist’s responsibility to ensure that patient goals are being met within the appropriate duration of a plan of care. Patients that receive PBPT follow the same discharge guidelines as other physical therapy clinics. Long term and short term goals are established within the initial evaluation and discussed with the Patient.

Iron Butterfly PBPT now offering Myofascial Decompression

Myofascial Decompression is a manual technique Physical Therapists use to address soft tissue dysfunction. Sometimes you have to work on the top layer – the skin and fascia to see results rather then going straight for the muscles in a compressive manner. If the root cause of a problem (back pain, knee pain etc) is from the soft tissue structures, myofascial decompression can be an effective tool to help decompress the fascial layers and help you move more efficiently. The therapist can use various techniques to help decompression soft tissue. The cups can be placed on one or many muscles. The negative pressure of the cups can help “lift” the layer of fascia to increase mobility and improve movement. Along side of MFD, therapists are trained to also provide functional movement patterns to coincide with the manual work of MFD. Both techniques have to work together to see optimal results.

“After trying several physical therapists for my migraine pain and seeing no results I came to Iron Butterfly to take part in their physical therapy. It was amazing that they incorporated Pilates principles directly into the treatment plan. I began to notice immediate results. The breathing exercises and posture correction alone were enough to offer some immediate relief. The therapist carefully documented my progress and provided me with many at-home exercises. I would highly recommend Iron Butterfly to anyone in need of physical therapy or just a phenomenal workout.” – Jonathan
